Case Study: UX Design for CMS Migration to Craft/Magento

Project Overview

WCEI (Wound Care Education Institute) provides continuing education courses for healthcare professionals. In 2024, the organization initiated a full site migration from Kinteco to a new Craft/Magento CMS. This migration offered an opportunity to modernize the site’s interface, improve UX across key flows, and align with updated brand guidelines—all while preserving SEO performance.

My Role

As the UX Designer, I led the end-to-end experience design. I worked closely with:

  • Our Creative team (for brand alignment)

  • UX Researchers (to validate design decisions)

  • Developers and our Product Manager (for smooth implementation)

Goals
  • Migrate to Craft/Magento without harming SEO

  • Build a modern design system aligned with brand standards

  • Improve UX across three key flows (ex. Account Creation, Course Discovery, and Checkout)

Process

1. Establishing the Design System

I created a scalable design system based on brand guidelines provided by our Creative team. This included typography, color systems, components, and responsive behaviors—ensuring design consistency across the new platform.

2. Data Driven Prioritization

Using Microsoft Clarity, I identified the five most visited pages on the site. These became the initial focus for redesign. I developed prototypes for each, improving information hierarchy and simplifying UI elements to reduce friction and cognitive load.

3. Rapid User Feedback

In collaboration with the UX Research team, we conducted a preference test at a major industry trade show. Real user feedback gave us confidence in our design direction and helped us prioritize refinements before rolling out the broader site updates.

4. Collaboration with Development

I partnered closely with the Product Manager and dev team during the build phase, reviewing front-end implementations, providing assets, and addressing questions to ensure design integrity throughout.

Current Status (as of Q2 2025)
  • Design system finalized

  • High-traffic pages redesigned and prototyped

  • Preference testing completed

  • Front-end development nearly complete

  • Backend integration and final QA in progress

What’s Next
  • Full launch targeted for early Q3 2025

  • Post-launch user testing to validate flow optimizations

  • SEO and performance metrics tracking

Takeaways

This project has been a great example of:

  • Aligning UX strategy with brand and business goals

  • Leveraging data and research to drive design decisions

  • Balancing aesthetics, usability, and technical feasibility in a complex migration
